Obituary of George Charles Gergulas

Please share a memory of George to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
George Charles Gergulas, 94, was called Home to be with the Lord on Friday, January 24, 2024.

George was born November 14, 1929, in Orange, NJ, to Charles and Estelle Gergulas, who were Greek immigrants.  The youngest of their three sons, he graduated from Central High School in Newark, and then worked as a machinist’s apprentice for Westinghouse in Bloomfield. From 1950-1954, he served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War, given Q clearance while working stateside on the atomic bomb.  It was during this time that he came to know the Lord Jesus Christ as his Savior, and the following Scripture verse shaped his life for the rest of his days: "Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new."

After his military service, George attended Barrington College in Rhode Island, graduating with a degree in history; upon graduation, he returned briefly to Westinghouse. A few years later, he began his career working for the Union County Public School system as a high school industrial arts teacher, and retired in 1993 after 30 years there.

George married his dear wife Elsie (Heintz) in August 1966, and shortly thereafter, moved to their home in Stirling where they raised their family.  Many happy memories were made in this home; it was from here that Elsie was called home to Heaven in 2017, and where George lived for a total of 55 years.  After an illness last spring, he recovered in the home of his daughter Marilyn, her husband Courtney, and their children, which was a time cherished by them all.  In July 2023, he relocated to Victoria Mews Assisted Living in Boonton; he thrived in this new community, seeking to be a friend to others and also leading a weekly Bible study while his strength allowed.

George enjoyed reading and studying his Bible, spending hours taking notes and delving deeply into God's Word; praying faithfully through the many prayer lists he kept; traveling extensively across the continental USA numerous times with his family; and creating a variety of projects at his school and at home.  He was a skilled woodworker and machinist and spent a long stretch of his retirement years volunteering at the Veterans Affairs Hospital wood-shop in Basking Ridge.  He was a committed member of Trinity Baptist Church in Montville, NJ, for over 56 years, a faithful husband to Elsie, devoted father to Valerie Kamps and Marilyn Woodhouse, and beloved grandfather to Matthew, Benjamin, Rachel, and Anna Kamps; and Olivia and Nathaniel Woodhouse.

A memorial service is scheduled for February 10th at 11:00 a.m. at Trinity Baptist Church of Montville, NJ.  (Repast to follow.)

Blessed is the man.... whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and in His law he meditates day and night. He shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that brings forth its fruit in its season, whose leaf also shall not wither; and whatever he does shall prosper. ~ from Psalm 1
